Aug. 10 - Aug 16, 2009

Monday, Aug.10
Shep decided that we needed another day of fishing on the Madison. It got pretty warm today so it was a pleasure to spend time wading in the cool water. I still can’t catch a fish. I started the “25th hour” for book club. It is a pretty quick read, not sure how I like it yet. Beading is going to take up some time between now and when we get home so that I have some new merchandise for the PCA gift shop at the end of the month. Moving on in the morning.
Tuesday Aug 11-Sat. Aug 16
Camped beside the Wise River outside of Divide MT. Very pretty and peaceful. Shep did a little hiking and a little fishing. Reading and relaxing. Thursday we stopped in Bozeman to visit the Montana State bookstore for a new t-shirt for Shep. On to Big Timber, MT to the Spring Creek Campground. http://www.springcreekcampground.com/
It is pretty nice but close packed. Thursday evening we had a sudden hail storm. Hail about the size of nickels. Shep was a little concerned about the hood of the truck but it was a needless concern.
Friday we wondered around to town of Big Timber http://www.bigtimber.com/index.php?pg=webcam
There are a couple of art galleries, a couple of bars and restaurants. We enjoyed a good lunch at the Grand Hotel. Don’t get too excited by the name, it is nice but it is a small town. http://www.thegrand-hotel.com/
Sat.we awoke to very chilly and windy weather. We ventured to the local Farmers’ market. I was surprised to see Amish, (I think) but they had wonderful looking produce. It was a small market but we did manage to stimulate the economy here also. Our next stop was about 30 miles away in Livingston which also is a small western town with several art galleries and unique little shops. Not much happening there today. http://www.livingstonmontana.com/

July 23 - Sunday, Aug 9, 2009

Thurs. July 23 –
Thursday was a hang out day. We wandered up and down the canyon from our campsite, took a couple of walk-abouts.
Friday was laundry day. Check out the DuBois Laundromat. They do have Wi-Fi so we were able to check email. I seem to be having a glitch with sending, however. We had a wonderful pizza lunch at Paya Deli, did a little shopping before heading back up the valley to Horse Creek.

Saturday ended up being cloudy with rain on and off all day. We filled the day with a lot of reading, crosswords, Sudoku, beading and napping. All the essentials of a good vacation.
Sunday morning we broke camp in order to reach town in time for the local Farmers’ Market. Armed with a couple of bags of fresh veggies we headed over the pass toward Moran Junction and south toward Jackson. It is always a thrill when the Tetons first pop into sight; there is nothing like it. We visited the Gros Vente campground for their dump station and a fresh water supply before the bumpy ride up to Atherton Creek campground on Slide Lake. We were greeted by Greg and Dimmie Zeigler for our yearly rendezvous. The mosquitoes are fierce; luckily we have the screened canopy. Our campsite is in the center of the loop below.

Monday took us into Jackson for a visit to the vet. Maggie has not been right since we left home; lethargic, not eating, not interested in backing at the cows. Blood work and $200 told us that she does have some sort of infection. Hopefully the antibiotics with get her back to her normal cheery self before too long.

Every Tuesday Greg volunteers with the park service at the Lawrence Rockefeller Preserve. http://gtnpnews.blogspot.com/2008/06/laurance-s-rockefeller-preserve-center.html Shep and I met him there when his shift was over to take the 3 mile hike to Phelps Lake. What a unique, beautiful place! This area had belonged to the rockefeller’s for over 70 years as their private refuge. Lawrence donated the land, paid to have all 30 buildings removed, or moved to other sites in the park, as well as directring the renaturalization of the area. Enjoying this gorgous area is a wonderful way to spend a few hours.
Now this is great communication between faculty and board!

Wednesday was a mild, sunny day that just begged for a kayak paddle on Slide Lake. Shep and I paddled the length of the lake to take a look at the huge beaver lodge that is safely tucked into a small cove. As we paddled away from the cove I heard a large splash behind us. I turned the kayak to see what was going on. Pretty far off I thought I saw something floating in the water; when it suddenly changed direction I was forced to investigate. As I paddled closer I was able to make out the head of a fairly large beaver. He was swimming within 25 ft. of the kayaks, then he would slap his large tail on the water and dive straight down! We saw this several times in the half hour or so that he played hide and seek with us. We watched in fascination as he swam back and forth around us. Sometimes he would stay underwater for a couple of minutes, only to surface several yards away from where he disappeared. What an awesome experience on this spectacular mountain lake! We are so lucky!

Greg picked Jamie up from the SLC shuttle and brought her to camp with us. She is sleeping on our pull out in the Arctic Fox. What a treat to spend time with her.

Thursday and Friday were spent hiking, kayaking, reading, eating. What more could we ask for in this beautiful setting?Look closely to see Dimmie and Shep on the cliff in the picture below.

Saturday bright and early to the farmers market for fresh veggies followed by breakfast at e.leaven reasturant owned by former Kiski boy Hunter Frobouck. Good food , good atmosphere, freindly service. http://www.planetjh.com/restaurants/A_104047.aspxWe returned to our campsite where several of Zeigler freinds stopped by to help celebrate Greg's birthday. They have such a widely diverse and interesting group of friends. Retired newspaper publishers, bankers, teachers, librarians, potters, writers. The highlight for me was meeting Buster, the search and rescue dog whose handler is a retired CA Univ. Multimedia Educational Resource for Learning and Online Teaching development. Check out the site, teachers. http://www.merlot.org/merlot/index.htm

Back to Buster. I handled a quarter, threw it out into the sagebrush. His owner, Chuck, told Buster to get to work. Within 2 minutes he had found the quarter, put his nose right on it so Chuck could pick it up. That was his ”evidence seeking” skill. He also is a search and rescue both on land AND in the water. That must be tricky!
Sunday night Aug. 2, we joined the Ziggys for a party that one of the rangers was throwing for the workers and volunteers at the Rockefeller Preserve. She is married to a man from India who is an investment banker. They own one of the most spectacular homes with a full view of the Tetons from every room. The décor is a blend of Indian and Western that works very well. Their art work was gorgeous. The food was Indian but not too spicy. What a fun evening.
When we returned to the Fox Maggie was not doing well at all. She appeared disoriented and was staggering around. She will go to back to the vet tomorrow.
Monday Aug. 3, 2009
We took Maggie in to the vet about 9:30am to leave her there for the day. They were going to do some further testing to try to determine the problem. We spent the day at Zeigler house while they took Jamie back to SLC. Late in the day we returned to the vet. They told us from the x-ray they could see a mass on her spleen. We had no choice but to put her down. It was a very sad but necessary event; we could not have her suffer anymore. The Spring Creek Veterinary was really wonderful. The vet had called during the week to check on Mag and gave me her cell number to call on Sunday. They were very professional and compassionate through this ordeal. Maggie did have a few good days while on this sojourn as you can see by the pictures below.

Tues. Aug 4, 2009
We had planned on a day of fishing and relaxation however when I opened the under bed storage the wood that holds the slide out was split almost the entire length of the bed. I stop at Ziggy’s for a saw and the lumber store for wood was first on the agenda. Shep spent much of the day in repair mode. Dimmie and Greg joined us for dinner at the campground.
Wed. Aug. 5, 2009 We spent the day in Teton National Park. A drive to Jackson Lake Lodge, Jenny Lake, with a stop at Dornan’s. I quiet day for thoughts of Maggie. Dimmie and Greg cooked at their house tonight. We are always sorry to have to say goodbye to good friends but it is time for us to move on.

Thurs. Aug. 6, 2009 I leisurely drive through Yellowstone to Madison Campground made for a good day. It did rain a little off and on all day and into the evening. Since we had only called a couple of days ahead we were very lucky to get a site in the park for a couple of nights.

Fri. Aug 7, 2009 The day started with a bike ride along the Fire Hole flats. It was relatively flat but I definitely feel the altitude when I am exercising. We made a brief stop at Old Faithful but there are always so many people there that it is not my favorite place. The bison jams caused by the huge herds make for a slow ride through Hayden Valley, but we did not see any other wildlife. The road from Norris to Madison is under construction so there are 30 minute delays along there also. Not a bad day in YNP. We did enjoy the wildlife.

Bear, bison, elk, ground squirrel, geese.

Sat. Aug 8, 2009 A brief stop in West Yellowstonehttp://www.destinationyellowstone.com/ allowed us to help stimulate the economy. A beautiful Indian Storyteller Doll will have great home at our house. Of course there was a bead shop that had to be given a thorough examination also. Lunch at Ernie’s Deli allowed us to check email before we headed north to Ennis, MT. http://www.ennischamber.com/Full hook-ups at the RV Park allow us to take untimed showers and access internet. There was a small art festival in the town park, there were some very nice pieces there, but it was over shortly after we arrived. I think it was the first time they had this and they need to extend the hours next time.

Sun. Aug. 9, 2009 Shep was rearing to fish on the Madison River today.http://madisonriverfoundation.org/ Since I also have a license in MT, we were set. The Madison is wide but not too deep in this area. Ennis is renowned for its fly fishing. We spent a couple of hours wading and casting without much luck. It is a good thing that it is such a beautiful setting. I really do enjoy wading in the water when the sun is shining and the weather is warm. A slow drive around Ennis Lake finished off the day. Have I mentioned how lucky we are?

Dubois, Wyoming July 13 -16, 2009

Monday, July 13 – Thursday, July 16, 2009
Four days of cross country road trip: Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, and finally to DuBois, WY. Thank goodness for a non eventful trip.

Friday, July 17- Mon. July 19
We took a ride in truck along some of the dirt logging roads surrounding the near mountainsides. A couple of miles from our campsite we watched 2 fairly large bears run across the road in front of us. I was not fast enough with finding the camera to get a picture. I am glad that I insist on carrying the bear spray.

We continued onward and upward into the mountains. Some of these roads had major ruts slicing the roadway. When we reached near the top, Shep decided that he should ride his bike back, which in turns means that I must drive back down. Actually it is easier to drive than to be a passenger because you have the steering wheel to hold on to rather than simply being bounced around inside the truck. It was an enjoyable adventure.
We met a couple from MN. Who camped next to us for 2 days. She was a nurse; he was an Emotional Support teacher and mandolin player in a folk band which played a lot of political renditions. We shared campfires and stories. It is always interesting to meet new people and discover all the things you have in common, and enjoy the different life experiences.
Shep has done a couple of bike rides from the camp ground and a couple of hikes to the surrounding hilltops. I have been working a several new pieces of jewelry trying to get enough variety ready for the PCA gift shop display in Sept.

Mon. July 20 - Wed. July 22, 2009
We spent the day “in town”. It is a small town with one over priced grocery store, half a dozen bars and restaurants, a nice butcher shop, a sporting gear store, hardware, a couple small privately owned motels, PO, gas station, a few gift shops, one art gallery, several closed or abandoned businesses, and a very nice bead shop. Any guesses where we spent the most time? We attempted to take Maggie to the local vet because she has been so lethargic. When we arrived the clinic had a couple of cowboys milling around inside an otherwise empty building. One of them told me the female vet was off somewhere attempting to save colic horse that was down and being threatened by a grizzly bear. Never a dull moment in WY.
The fishing has been very slow in Horse Creek from the campground. We drove the 17 miles up more dirt roads, although these were in much better shape, to Double Cabin area to try our fly fishing skills. The view is always spectacular with 360 degrees of mountain range surrounding a wide flat valley with a large river meandering through it. It is fun to wade from one section of the river to another, ranging from a fairly strong current over good size rocks to slow moving pools.

Needless to say the fishing was not much better in this magnificent setting but was a good day anyhow.
Wed. was spent on horseback in the Dunoir Valley area. The ride through the forest was cool and enjoyable except for the realization that much of it is being killed off by the pine beetle causing it to be a devastating wildfire waiting to happen.

We passed this abandon car on the trail. Any guesses as to the year?

Lunch was enjoyed at an abandoned Forest Service Ranger Station. The wildflowers are amazing everywhere this year because of the wet winter and spring they have enjoyed here. Maybe the drought is going to end. We traveled several miles by horse up to a wide mountain valley where our outfitter had a pack trip camped for 5 days.
We had a pack mule with us to deliver the necessities: coffee creamer, hot chocolate, crackers, cheese, and salami. Shep fished in a small pond at the far end of the valley. I tried to offer moral support but the mosquitoes were attempting to drain my blood supply much faster than I could kill them. They obviously enjoyed the bug spray condiment that we were offering.

This forced me to turn tail back to the pack site. After the obligatory one fish catch, Shep followed. We rode back to the trailhead without any major incidents or bear sightings. On the long ride back to town a large moose cow ran down the road in front of the truck and horse trailer long enough for us to slow down to allow her to cross without collision. It was a great day in the wilds of Wyoming.

Aug 15-16 Jackson, WY

Sat. Aug. 15 Up early to meet Dimmie and Greg to go to the Farmer's Market. We bought some wonderful produce which we sent home with Greg and Shep while Dimmie and I went to the Art Fair. http://www.jhartfair.org/ It is a relatively small show but it is very good. The artists are excellent.Wendy Newman, who made my new necklace, was there. she gave me the information sheet with all of the stones listed. Very cool. Shep went back to Gros Ventre http://www.usparkinfo.com/grandteton.htmlto do a little fishing while Dim and I continued to shop!! Dimmie dropped me off at the campsite in the afternoon so that I could do a little beading. Greg and Dimmie returned in the evening to have dinner and a campfire with us. We sat and watched the full moon rise over the Sleeping Indian mountain http://www.alltravelcams.com/jackson_hole/sleeping_indian.php
in a clear sky. It was so bright that the tip of the Grand Teton could be seen by the snow reflecting the moonlight. A wonderful evening!

Sun. Aug. 16. Greg and Shep are ditch digging in anticipation of putting electricity to the barn Dimmie is turning into a potter's studio for herself. They are dirty and sweaty men!

Aug 12 - 14 Salt Lake City, UT

Tues. Aug 12 Up very early to get to the airport by 7am. As we were checking we were told that Delta was asking for bumps because of the volcano delays. They would give all 4 of us vouchers good for a year plus guarantee seats on a flight 3 hours later. Needless to say we jumped on it; except for Kipp who was sort of dragged along with us. We had an extra three hours in the Anchorage airport which gave us the best view we had of Mt. McKinley the entire time we were in Alaska. Go fingure. This site shows live webcam so sometimes you can see it and sometimes not, but you can check out some older shots to get the idea. http://www.acsyellowpages.com/webcam/McKinley%20Cam/images/webcam02707.jpg
We arrived in SLC about 7pm local time. Early to bed for all of us, poor Kipp has to go to work in the am.

Wed. Aug. 13. Kipp went to work, Jeanne for her shot to help get rid of her bee sting allergies. Shep and I slept in a little and did some laundry. Jeanne returned to take us to lunch at the Dodo Reasturant. We then proceeded to the Utah Hands Gallery http://utahands.com/where we met with the artist, Wendy Newman, http://www.wendynewmanjewelry.com/whe showed me her newest works. I got to pick what I wanted in exchange for the things I had returned. What a treat. I also was able to find a wedding gift and a Christmas gift in the gallery. I am so excited and pleased with all my purchases.
We grabbed a couple of pizzas for dinner. Our next project was to move everything out of the little room so that carpet can be laid in the morning. we all collapsed early.

Thurs. Aug 14. We were up early to move the remaining furniture out of the room and make way for the workiers. On the road to Jackson by way of Logan Pass http://www.public-domain-photos.com/travel/montana/logan-pass-4.htm and Bear Lake.http://www.bearlake.com/
We arrived in Jackson about 4pm. When we entered the Fox the smell was horrific. Evidentally the fridge/freezer had stopped for some reason, there was propane, and everything had spoiled; tuna, shrimp, chicken, filets, bacon. Yuck!!I hope we are able to get the stink out of the freezer!!

Aug 9-11 Denali, AL

Sat. Aug. 9 It is so odd to wake up at 5am and have it be so bright out. It rained on and off all night making it damp and very chilly as we climbed aboard the slightly modified school bus for our trip through Denali at 6am. http://www.nps.gov/dena/ It is about 80 miles mostly on a gravel road to the Kantishna Lodge. Our driver, LaVerne, was a wealth of information and was able to stop the bus on a dime when we spotted wildlife. We saw 6 grizzly bears, one with a cub, ptarmigans, golden eagle, fox, Dahl sheep, caribou, moose, snowshoe hair, ground squirrel, marmot in the 14 hours that we were on the bus. Lunch was served at the Kantishna Lodge http://www.kantishnaroadhouse.com/lodge.htm which used to be a gold mining camp. While we were there we heard an Athabaskan elder speak about her culture as well as another native give a dog sled exhibition. http://www.42explore2.com/sleddog.htm http://www.iditarod.com/

The ride back out of the park is long, especially when you realize that you are revisiting all the same potholes that we hit on the way in. We did see several more animals on the way back out though. McKinley was still illusive behind the layer of clouds but there are so many other amazing vistas and peaks that it is still exciting. There are mountains everywhere you look.

Sun. Aug 10 It rained heavily all night so it seemed like a really good morning to sleep in. After a late breakfast we toured the visitor's center and had reindeer stew for lunch. Shep, Kipp and Jeanne suited up for the rain and took a short hike at the Savage River area which is at the end of the area where personal vehicles are able to travel. I decided to stay in the car and read. We went to a little restaurant called the Park for an amazing meal to celebrate Jeanne and Kipp's 17th anniversary.

Mon. Aug 11 A four hour drive to Anchorage took as into the sunshine again! We returned to the Snow Goose Brewery http://www.alaskabeers.com/ rooftop for lunch. We walked around town for a while and then found our B & B, the Arctic Fox. http://www.arcticfoxinn.com/ It is a cute little apt. We also returned to Orso http://www.orsoalaska.com/ for Alaskan King Crab for dinner. We are a little concerned about our flight tomorrow because there are a couple of volcanoes erupting in the Aleutian Islands that have sent ash plumes into the flight paths causing many cancellations. We will find out soon enough.
